Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, is simply a must for any traveler to Switzerland. Reached only by a train that winds its way around mountains and over gorges with breathtaking scenery, Zermatt is traffic-free. For some magical vistas of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks, take the popular cogwheel railway to Gornergrat. It's easy to get around Zermatt on foot (the town is car-free) and its well worth exploring the Hinter Dorf area, which is crammed with traditional tumbledown wooden Valais homes.Getting to ZermattZermatt is located in the South of Switzerland, 234 km (145 miles) from Geneva, the nearest airport and 280 km (174 miles) from Zurich. Travel time by train from Geneva is 3.5 hours and from Zurich it is 4 hours and 40 minutes. There are direct train connections in Brig and Visp to the modern narrow-gauge Matterhorn Gotthard railway, which arrives in Zermatt after a 90-minute journey through the romantic, rugged Vispa Valley. The resort is 148 km (92 miles) from Montreux.
